Are you prepared to survive without any services for at least 3 days? Are you trained to be able to help others after a disaster? Do you know what the Seattle Fire Department will do after a disaster? Are you familiar with the response plans of the Seattle Office of Emergency Management, Seattle Police Department, the Red Cross and King County Public Health?
West Seattle Be Prepared is putting together a new Training and Education Series with the intent of making West Seattle citizens the most educated, well-trained and most prepared community in the area! This series will feature informative lectures, hands-on training, panel discussions and presentations by agencies and city services; presenters will speak not only to their plans for Seattle, but more specifically to the plans for West Seattle. What resources will be available? What resources or training do we still need?
Topics include medical options for West Seattle during an emergency; the local emergency procedures and plans of West Seattle Fire Department Battalion 7; and how radios, social media and technology can be used. We’ll focus on concerns that many of us have: disaster preparedness for vulnerable populations, which include children and seniors, psychological (as well as physical) first aid, pet preparedness and pet first aid, and more!
The series kicked off on Thursday, April 7th with a presentation and some training by the King County Red Cross. Deb Ticknor, Red Cross Readiness Manager, explained how the Red Cross responds to local disasters. David Shannon, Disaster Education Program Manager, gave an interactive disaster preparedness presentation for individuals and families. Lastly, we learned CPR and First Aid techniques (demonstrations and training) by Sarah Rothman that help to prepare for a disaster.
Our next event in this series is being planned for May 16th; details to be announced shortly.
If you have additional training or presentation suggestions, or if you are able to donate your time/training as a presenter, please contact westseattlebeprepared@gmail.com. Here is a printable flyer.
